Mayor Parker has announced Houston’s new partnership with Tweet My Jobs which uses Facebook and Twitter to show people who in the city is hiring.
“I came into office in the midst of the recession and while there are lots of responsibilities that I have as mayor, trying to build the economy has been my number one priority.”
Mayor Parker hopes that bringing Tweet My Jobs to Houston will improve communication between job seekers and employers and will let leaders know what industries in Houston are suffering or growing. City Hall can then use this information to decide which companies they should lobby to move to Houston.
Tweet My Jobs offers free resume building services, exercises to help job seekers prepare for job interviews, and shows users who is hiring in their immediate area.
This is Senior Vice President of Tweet My Jobs Brendan Cotter:
“Everyone starts to build that connectivity and understands they can take social media, which came out of the gate as family, friends, photos, pictures, videos, etc., and realize how they can turn that into a way to monetize your own future and your own job or economic development.”
At six percent, Houston’s unemployment rate is among the lowest for big cities. As the city continues to expand, however, Mayor Parker would like to keep it that way.
“We have thousands of people moving here all the time. We’re attracting some of the best and the brightest from around the world. I want to make sure that as more opportunities come, that those folks who are already here to have access to the jobs that are available.”
Houston is the largest city that Tweet My Jobs is available in, but it has seen success in other cities like Atlanta and Newark. After using Tweet My Jobs for a year, the number of unemployed in the city of Atlanta was reduced by 15,000.
