Off-Duty Officer Thwarts Galleria Jewelry Store Robbery

One suspect was wounded by an off-duty police officer and another is at large after an attempted robbery of Nazar's jewelry store in the Galleria area today at noon.

Officer Kese Smith says officer M. Hernandez fired at both suspects as they fled while brandishing weapons, hitting one of them.

“The officer Hernandez, fearing for his safety and that of the cutomers and employees, discharged his duty weapon, striking the suspect, who got to the front door where he collapsed. He’s been taken to Ben Taub General Hospital in unknown condition. That first suspect remains at large. At this time it does not appear any of the customer or employees or the officer were hurt.”

The off-duty officer says the suspect who escaped had begun by beating a uniformed security guard while the other suspect smashed glass to steal jewelry. They tried to flee when confronted by the HPD officer.
