IHS CERAWeek Returns To Houston

The IHS CERAWeek energy conference kicks off this afternoon at the Hilton-Americas Houston downtown.

This year’s roster of speakers will include Microsoft chairman Bill Gates, former CIA director General Michael Hayden, and Matt Rose, chairman and CEO of BNSF Railway.

Dan Yergin is vice chairman of IHS and chairman of IHS CERAWeek. He says Rose’s inclusion is particularly significant.

“In the U.S., we have major new supplies, but we have old logistics. And one of the challenges that we have is to develop the transportation systems to move oil and gas from where they’re being produced today to markets.”

Yergin says that’s what’s driving the debates over building new pipelines like the Keystone XL. But it’s also leading to a push for alternative modes of transport. Last year, the amount of crude oil hauled by freight trains was up more than 250%.

“This is the 32nd year that we’ve done CERAweek in Houston, and this is the first year that we’ve had the CEO of a railroad.”
