The light rail trains will stop running at 7:45 p.m. Friday night. They’ll start running again in time for the morning commute on Monday.

The closure affects the entire Main Street line. That’s from Fannin South Station to UH Downtown. METRO’s Margaret O’Brien-Molina says they’re closing the line so they can upgrade communications and switching systems.

Crews are also doing work on the three new lines that are coming into downtown.

“In order to build all of that, we also have to connect to the system. The connections are downtown. A lot of work is going on right now to actually interline, which means to drive the track.”

So what does this mean for people who rely on the train to get around on the weekend?

“We will have the shuttle buses available, and again, those will do exactly what they would expect the train to do. It’s just that it will take a little bit longer.”

O’Brien-Molina says the shuttles will not go all the way to UH Downtown, so if you’re heading in that direction, you’ll have to walk a couple of blocks.

METRO is also advising drivers they could face some downtown detours because of the construction.
