The Houston Independent School District has a fully certified police department with approximately 200 armed police officers and an annual budget of $13.5 million.  At least one officer is assigned to each HISD middle and high school, while elementary schools are currently monitored by patrol officers.  HISD officials are currently reviewing the police department’s staffing levels and practices to ensure all appropriate measures are in place to protect students and staff.  HISD police estimate that the cost of assigning a full-time police officer to all 279 campuses would increase the department’s budget by approximately $10 million to $12 million per year.  HISD schools have lost more than $120 million over the past two years because of budget cuts imposed by the Texas Legislature.
