Gallegos, who had served Senate District 6 here in the Houston area since 1994, died last month. His name stayed on the ballot and he easily won re-election posthumously.
Now, Governor Rick Perry will have to call a special election to fill his seat. Alvarado says we can expect a formal announcement early next week.
“His succession was something that the senator and I talked about and I’ll just say in a few days there’s going to be more information rolling out about that very topic.”
Alvarado was reelected to her state House seat without opposition on Tuesday. She says she has a long history with Gallegos and his family.
“We both grew up in the East End in neighboring communities in the East End. We’re both proud Milby graduates and University of Houston graduates. A lot of commonalities. A lot of overlap between our families. My mom and his mom went to high school together. So there is definitely a strong bond and a strong relationship and a lot of history between our families.”
Former Harris County Commissioner Sylvia Garcia has also been mentioned as a possible successor to Gallegos.
