Harris County Constable Victor Trevino has made it his mission for more than a decade to make sure kids in his precinct stay safe Halloween night. Extra patrols will monitor the streets tonight. Probation officers will also make sure registered sex offenders on parole or probation turn off their porch lights and lock their gates as kids come to collect candy.
“We’re going to be out there. We’ll probably have over 20 patrol officers. There will be probation officers. There will be parole officers. We’re partnering up with them, so they’re available, so we need to contact them so they can check on the individual to see what their status is, even though we already have a list. We’ve targeted 100 homes. These are what we consider the high-risk individuals that we targeted.”
Trevino says before Halloween, his deputies make sure the message is clear to registered sex offenders on parole or probation that they’ll go back to jail if they break the rules.
“We’re fortunate in the past 10 years, there have been zero negative events that have occurred against our children. Whether it’s a traffic incident or any kind of criminal attack on our children. Nothing has happened. And that’s success. That’s how you measure success.”
There are an estimated 300 registered sex offenders in Precinct 6 and 7,000 in Harris County. Authorities also say parents or adult guardians should walk with kids from home to home tonight to make sure they stay safe.
