Gallegos served as the Senator from District 6 for almost two decades and made a lot of friends both in Austin and in Houston. Harold Cook was his political advisor and is helping the family with memorial plans, which begin tomorrow.

“Senator Gallegos’ body will lie in state beginning at 2 p.m. in the Senate Chamber in the Texas Capitol and there will be a celebration of his life beginning at 3 p.m..”

Cook says the memorial plans then shift back to Gallegos’ home town.

“We’ll return to Houston on Sunday at the University of Houston’s Cullen Performance Hall. At 4 p.m. visitation will begin and then at 6:30 there will be a rosary and it will be quite a show. Lots of really wonderful speakers who loved Mario Gallegos a lot.”

Cook says Gallegos was comfortable and peaceful in his last few days and was surrounded by close friends and family when he died Tuesday at The Methodist Hospital.

“The outpouring of support has been nothing short of overwhelming and positive and very uplifting for the family.”

His funeral mass is set for Monday morning at 9:30 at the downtown Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart.
