The 50-year-old Clemens started for the Skeeters a couple of weeks ago and didn’t look too bad, allowing only one hit over
three innings. Tonight, his son Koby will be catching for Sugar Land and Skeeters vice president of business development Christopher Hill expects even more fans at the ballpark than before.
The game will also be broadcast live on ESPN 3.
“I’ve never seen a minor league team ever receive the amount of publicity that we’ve been fortunate enough to be able receive. We subscribe to a media monitoring service and there have been over 5000 newscasts talking about the Sugar Land Skeeters nationwide, which is pretty wild for a team that is first starting out in their first season.”
Clemens hasn’t committed to any more starts after tonight and has said there are no immediate plans to try to pitch for the Astros before the end of the season. Hill says the Skeeters will enjoy “The Rocket” while they can.
“It is a huge challenge for someone who has been away from the game. He keeps himself in shape but he often says there’s
a difference between keeping yourself in shape and pitching. We just kind of take this one game at a time and see how it progresses and see how he feels about it and I think Roger is always going to be involved in some ways with our organization because this is his home town team.”
This is the first year the Skeeters have played in Sugar Land. They’re part of the independent Atlantic League. Tonight’s game is sold out, with more than 8,000 fans expected at the ballpark.
