Clemens turned 50 earlier this month and last pitched in the Majors in 2007 with the Yankees. On Saturday, he’ll take the mound for the Skeeters, who play in an independent league. Team President Matt O’Brien says Clemens looked good in an informal workout.
“He threw 88-89. All the competiveness in Roger Clemens came pouring back out. You know, it’s Roger Clemens. What’s not to like about him.”
Clemens was acquitted in June of lying to Congress about his use of steroids as a player. It ended a several year legal saga that put in his eventual trip to the baseball Hall of Fame in doubt. O’Brien says Clemens has only signed on for one game.
“This is certainly a wonderful opportunity and with Roger being from the Houston-area, it’s nice to have the hometown hero pitch for the hometown team.”
The Skeeters say there are no tickets left for Saturday’s game in Sugar Land at a new ballpark that opened just this year.
