Ted Cruz is making no official public appearances today. Lt. Governor David Dewhurst is almost done with his major appearances, though he will hold a high-dollar fundraiser this evening in Dallas. Mark Jones chairs the political science department at Rice University. He says both campaigns will spend all the time they have between now and 7 p.m. tomorrow on the phone.
“Anybody who voted in May, but who hasn’t voted yet, will be receiving phone call, after phone call, after phone call.”
Another thing Jones says people will notice — even more dueling ads between Cruz and Dewhurst.
“Anybody who watches the TV news tonight is going to see Dewhurst commercial, then a Cruz commercial, then Dewhurst, then Cruz, then Dewhurst-Dewhurst-Dewhurst, then one Cruz. It’s gonna be constant.”
Jones says if he were a betting man, he’d put even money on Cruz winning the nomination. He says the Cruz campaign has shown energy and enthusiasm that’s been lacking on the Dewhurst side. But Jones says Dewhurst could still come out ahead if he’s able to persuade enough Republicans who usually vote only in November to make a special trip to the polls tomorrow.
