Houston Auto Sales Hit New Post-Recession High

TexAuto Facts, published by InfoNation of Sugar Land, says dealers in the ten-county Houston metro area sold just shy of  270,000 vehicles in the twelve months leading up to March 2012. That’s up nearly 11% from the 244,000 vehicles sold during the same period last year.

Steve McDowell, president of InfoNation, credits Houston’s rising employment with boosting consumer confidence.

“I think the other thing is that the fleet has been aging regularly through the recession, till we get to where we have 10-  and 11-year-old vehicles out there. So I think we’ve moved into the period where people have decided they can begin to buy newer, more fuel-efficient vehicles and get rid of the old ones.”

Local auto dealers sold just over 25,000 vehicles in March, nearly 12% more than those sold in the same month last year. The quarter ending March 2012 recorded the highest vehicle sales of any quarter since the quarter ending June of 2008.
