Springsteen Delivers Keynote At SXSW

Bruce Springsteen delivered a keynote speech today at SXSW in Austin.

He covered the history of rock music, starting with Elvis Presley …

“Elvis was the first modern 20th Century man, creating fundamental outsider art that would be embraced by a mainstream popular culture. A new way of looking, a new way of thinking, a new way of being an American.”

Springsteen also covered the British Invasion that began in 1964 …

“Four guys, playing and singing, writing their material. The Beatles were cool. They were classical, formal, and created the idea of an independent unit where everything could come out of your garage.”

Springsteen’s week in Austin included a surprise performance Wednesday night with Joe Ely and Alejandro Escovedo.

SXSW is one of the largest music festivals in the United States, with thousand of performers playing in more than scores of music venues.  It runs through Sunday.
