“Que versiones podemos hacer un corto plazo para mejor a la equipo.”

That’s not not a translator.  That’s the Astros new general manager Jeff Luhnow, who grew up in Mexico City.  He’s spent the past 8 years working with the Cardinals as their VP of Scouting and Player Development.  Luhnow says turning Houston into a winning organization will definitely require an upgrade in talent.

“We’ve gotta be the best at finding talent, and developing talent and utilizing the talent here to help us win at the major league level.”

In baseball there are two ways to get better players: bring them in from other teams through trade or free agency, or draft them and wait for them to get better in the minor leagues.  Luhnow says the team has a plan that will rely on developing the young guys, and that requires patience.

“It’s a responsible plan.  It doesn’t steal from the future to make things a little bit better in the present.  It builds this organization for sustained success.  That’s what we want to do.  We want to create a winner that lasts, and we want to do it in the best way possible.”

This is the first major move under new team owner Jim Crane. Crane had lots of praise for Luhnow.

“When you look at his track record, he’s been a winner at every level in baseball he was put into a position to lead.”

Luhnow says he wants Houston to be the baseball team in Texas people are talking about. Even if that means using more of his Spanish to find great ballplayers in other countries.
