This week, State Impact-Texas is teaming with NPR on a project highlighting industrial air pollution. NPR reporters, working with the Center for Public Integrity, reviewed never-before published lists compiled by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to track polluters. For the KUT/KUHF StateImpact Texas project, Terrence Henry reports on a Corpus Christi neighborhood that sits right in the middle of several refineries on the list.
“Just doing a little bit of talking to some people in the neighborhood, out of 284 homes it looks like 40 to 50 percent of the people could have cancer. Fifty percent of the children in this neighborhood have some kind of physical or mental disorder. And basically people in the plants or who have anything to do with them — they do not care.”
