Astros Home Opener

The Astros play their season home opener tonight at Minute Maid Park. So far the team isn’t off to a great start, only winning one of six games so far. But as Bill Stamps reports — diehard fans are just as supportive as ever.

It’s early April and Astros fans have a reason to dance. Tonight is the first home game of the 2011 season. Never mind the fact that the team has already lost five games; never mind the fact that some baseball experts are picking them to be terrible this year. Juan Rodriquez of Houston will be behind regardless.

“I’ll be a fan no matter what.”

Stamps: “Why?”

“I don’t know it’s in our blood. Always been an Astros fan. Always will be no matter what.”

Rodriquez and his buddy Jerry Garcia have been coming to opening night for many years. They can’t remember the exact number, but Garcia says they’ve seen a lot of games.

“Best player was Jeff Bagwell. Best game was Biggio’s 3000th hit.”

For opening night the team has lots of festivities outside the stadium for fans: the music, food for sale and lots of booth with giveaways and prizes. That where Jerry Garcia was having a drink and waiting for the first pitch.

“I’m like the President. I’ve got a lot of hope. You know. It is what it is. You know the pitching staff. They’ve got some experience this time around, so hopefully we’ll have good pitching. But the team is real young right now, they’ve got a lot of young cats on the team and with young comes energy and you makes some mistakes, but you make your mistakes and keep on going.”

That Astros take on the Florida Marlins tonight. The game starts in about a half an hour at 6:05pm.
