Internet purchases play an expanding role in Christmas shopping. Ed Mayberry reports that experts are tracking the trends of this holiday shopping season for lessons that will carry through into 2011.

shopping bag online buttonThings may have kicked of with “Cyber Monday,” but judging by statistics, online shopping has steadily become part of the Christmas shopping experience. Suzy Sandberg is president of PM Digital.  She says online retailers have made it easy.

“Passwords are saved in people’s computers and it really has come down to just one click to actually place an order because credit card information is stored and I can see why the growth has happened. I mean, as gas prices are rising, also, you know, it’s easier to shop from home. There’s a lot of deals to be had on the internet.”

Sandberg says there trends in online shopping that could carry on into next year.

“The big online shopping event was always ‘Cyber Monday,’ but they have started to portion out those promotions on other days, like for instance ‘Black Friday’ online was a huge event. That used to be just a retail, brick-and-mortar event. Promotions definitely drive sales.”
