HISD Trustees Set To Vote On Creating All-Boys School

One month after the Houston Independent School District approved creating its first “all girls” school, the board is set to do the same for boys. This afternoon, trustees will vote on a proposal to open an all-male college prep academy. David Pitman has more.

The boys’ school would be located at the current E.O. Smith Education Center, which currently serves elementary and middle school students.  Dallas Dance is the Chief Middle School officer with HISD.  He says the academy is modeled after similar programs in Chicago and Harlem.

“And those schools only have grades 9 through 12 only.  We’re looking to actually extend it from 6 to 12, so we can get young men when they’re transitioning to middle school and track them to make sure they’re prepared not only to graduate from high school, but also graduate from college.”

Like the all-girls academy approved last month, the boys school will screen prospective students with test scores and interviews.   There will be a strict uniform dress code, but it’s not known yet whether the boys school will include athletics, which the girls school does not.  Dance says says another unknown is whether the district will provide transportation to and from the school, located near Lyons, east of 59.

“I think once you determine whether transportation will be provided, that’s when you actually look at who will take advantage of the opportunity.  I had two parents call me just yesterday saying they wanted their young male student to participate, but because of where they live in the city, it wouldn’t be possible for them to get to the schools.”

The plan for the all-boys school is to admit sixth and ninth graders next fall, and phase in the other four grades over the following two years.
