Texans Training Camp

With buckets of water, barrels of ice, and first aid equipment close at hand, the Houston Texans are sweating it out at Reliant Park as they head into their first full week of training camp. And while veterans are accustomed to the challenges, other players are getting their first taste of life in the NFL, as KUHF’s Gail Delaughter reports.

While the Texans’ elite players know their roles in the upcoming season, others are battling it out for playing time, or spots on the roster. Taking part in his first NFL workout is Houston native Earl Mitchell, who had standout careers at Arizona and Northshore High School. Mitchell says it was exciting seeing his Texans jersey in his locker.

I remember the first time I looked there, when I first picked up my varsity jersey at Northshore. So I get the same feeling every day I come here to put my jersey on.

And as for taking his game to the next level, Mitchell brushes off the heat and the pressure, saying it’s all about getting to know your teammates and learning from the veterans.

Well you know in college it does a certain speed, different from high school. But you get used to the people. And that just helps make the transition, so you can get used to playing fast teams.

The Texans’ first preseason game is August 14 as they hit the road to take on the Cardinals. They go on to meet the defending champion Saints in New Orleans. The Texans first home game August 28 against the Cowboys.
