Rescue Operations Continue at Transocean Rig in Gulf

A company official says there was no sign of trouble before an oil drilling platform exploded off the Louisiana coast. The rig was under contract to BP and is owned by Transocean, and the company’s David Rainey says search and rescue operations continue.

“At the time of the incident there were 126 people on board the rig: 79 Transocean staff, six BP staff, and the remainder were third-party service partners that work onboard the rig.  We’ve accounted for 115 personnel, and currently have 11 missing.”

Transocean vice president Adrian Rose says crews were performing routine work before the explosion and there were no signs of trouble. The rig is still burning and it’s not clear what caused the explosion. So far the environmental impact appears minimal.
