The La Comida Food Drive Begins this Week

The city’s largest annual effort to collect
food for those in need will be held this week.

The Houston Police Department’s 24th
annual La Comida food drive runs from
Thursday through Sunday at 14 area
Fiesta Mart locations.

Rod Rice reports.

In 1985 HPD Officer Joe Dominguez wanted to help hungry Latinos in Houston.  He put together a food drive that helped feed 600 families that year. La Comida has been going strong ever since with help from Fiesta Marti and the Pepsi Bottling Group. Fiesta provides the food collection locations and Pepsi provides the warehouse where volunteers package the food in boxes.  Last year more than 35-hundred families received boxes of food. Fiesta’s Juanita Elizondo says 2008 was a very good year.

“It said a lot about the Houston community in terms of their generosity because we know that times are difficult and we suspect that they are equally or more difficult this year.”

Contributions of non-perishable food will be received from noon to 8pm Thursday and Friday and from 9-to-5 Saturday and Sunday.

Cash donations are also accepted by contacting HPD’s Public Affairs Division. Officer Alvin Steelman says last year almost 52-thousand dollars was collected, a record high.

“Every single penny of the money we get donated to the food drive goes toward the purchase of food.  Fiesta works with us on this food drive and they let us purchase the food in bulk so they really goes a long way when it comes to feeding the needy people during Christmas.”

To make cash donations for La Comida call HPD at 713-308-3232.
