We’ll start with the bad news. Part of  I-10 will be completely closed in order for crews to paint stripes and set out concrete barriers. It’s a 2 mile stretch between the 45 and 59 freeways. The good news is they’re doing it over the weekend instead of during the week when people need to get back and forth from work.

This is Diedra Samuels with TxDOT.

“This is actually phase one of three phases. They are going to basically repave the east bound main lanes from I-45 to White Oak Bayou Bridge, so while they’re doing that we’re going to be down to one through lane and also the exit ramp on Smith Street — Smith Street will be open, but one lane will be closed.”

The closure begins tonight and lasts till Monday morning. Samuels says it’ll be up to motorists to make their way around the construction.

“We’re actually encouraging motorist to start thinking about alternate detours, think about ways you can get into the downtown area.”

Using federal stimulus money, the city plans to repave about 2 miles of I-10…something they’d planned on doing, but until now just didn’t have the money. Bill Stamps, KUHF- Houston Public Radio News.
