Plans For Trans-Texas Corridor Quietly Die

After years of debate and opposition, the Texas Department of Transportation has officially ended plans for a statewide network of toll roads and rail lines. Jack Williams reports.

The Trans-Texas Corridor is now all but dead after TX-DOT’s recommendation to federal highway authorities. This is TX-DOT executive director Amadeo Saenz.

“Following thousands of comments from Texans and in keeping with the Transportation Commission’s commitment to consider existing facilities before work on new locations, the impact of the comments that we received, the impact on the corridor, the impact on properties because of timeliness of the process and additional comments that dealt with impacts to the environment and properties, we’ve sent a letter to the Federal Highway Administration where we’re recommending the no-action alternative for the TTC35 Tier One environmental study.” 

TX-DOT has already spent millions of dollars on studies for the corridor. That total could go higher as it brings
the project to a halt. TX-DOT’s Ted Houghton admits the agency probably dropped the ball in promoting the corridor.  

“We didn’t do a very good job of explaining the Trans-Texas Corridor. A lot of it was mostly out fault in how we explained it, how we rolled it out. We’re not  very good marketers here at the Texas Department of Transportation and I’ve got the scars to prove it.”

The entire project would have cost at least $175 billion. Now, officials say they’ll use some of that money to make
improvements on existing roadways in Central Texas.
