Lenox BBQ Falls to Light Rail

It’s the end of the line for an East End business.

As METRO expands mass transit lines in the city
some established businesses will have to suffer.

This morning the front half of Lenox Barbeque
fell to a demolition crew.

The iconic eatery had to make way for the East End
light rail line that will run along Harrisburg Avenue.

Rod Rice reports.

The brick building is about a hundred feet long and fifty wide and came right up to the sidewalk. That’s why it had to go, at least most of it.

“What we’re doing today is just separating the first part of the building.”

That’s Dennis Clooney with Demolition Experts, his team basically cut the building in two. The back of it remains standing.

“We’re cutting the front off and basically redoing the entire kitchen.”

Erik Mrok has owned Lenox Barbecue for the past 12-years.

“We’re going to keep on catering. I’ll build back later, if I decide to do that and I might just get a nice trailer and pull it up and just do takeout only.”

Mrok watched the demolition and took pictures.  While he accepted what was happening he was not happy about it.

“This is wrong, totally, totally wrong. Yeah and as far as “end of and era”  as far as this place here, yeah I think it is.”

As workers sprayed water to cut down on dust the room where countless East Enders have eaten for 53 years came tumbling down.
