What if you could spend less time waiting for a doctor’s appointment and more time actually speaking to one? That service is now available to senior citizens, a segment of the population that needs it more than any other.

“It is prevention focused, it is primary care, and it is coordinated so that your primary care doctor will knmow everything that goes on in your healthcare life.”

Doctor Clive Fields founded Select Senior Clinics. They are primary care clinics designed to take care of the specialized needs of a senior healthcare clinic.

“Through the use of an electronic medical record, we’re able to communicate with the specialists and the hospitals in the community, and offer what we typically refer to as a medical home. A place where a patient can come and receive quality primary healthcare services in a coordinated and safe environment.”

The second Select Senior Clinic to be opened is located in north Houston. It’s in an area that has never had the kind of coordinated primary care services that lead to the best possible clinical outcomes. Dr. Fields says the present healthcare system in place is driven by technology and provides very fragmented care.

“By providing one place where a senior can come and get coordinated primary care, all the studies have shown that their clinical outcomes will be improved.”

Doctor Trevor Rabie co-founded the clinic, which used to be a hospital.

“We had to tear down walls and move walls around, and basically construct a clinic that was senior friendly. So, we have wide corridors and wide doors and accomodate many seniors on wheelchairs or walkers, and make it comfortable and safe for them.”

Patients can use the clinic’s wellness center to exercise on senior-friendly machnes and engage in discussion on health issues. Although the service offered by Select Senior Clinics is usually found in more affluent areas, it accepts only Medicare, Medicaid and the TexanPlus Medicare Advantage Plan. Dr. Fields says their patient caseload is six times lower than that of a primary care physician.

“This is really a chance for us to do what we had planned on doing, which is provide the type of primary care services that are not only beneficial to a patient, but make a doctor feel good about what he’s doing. We see results everyday in patients that otherwise would not have the kind of results that they get, because of the care that we can provide. So, do we look forward to providing this to an underserved population? Absolutely!”
