Next Tuesday, June 30th, is the last deadline for people who still have not paid their property taxes for 2008.  County Tax Office spokesman Don Sumners says that’s when the penalties start .

“And there’s actually an additional 20 percent penalty, and a three percent P&I that’s added on as July one, for the regular penalty and interest. So it’s a substantial increase just by missing the payment by a day.”

Sumners says they also turn the delinquent accounts over to outside collections attorneys.

“That’s correct the collection attorneys receive the delinquent roll from us, and they are responsible for collecting after the July one date.”

Sumners urges people to settle up by then, or call the tax office and arrange to pay in installments.

“We do give six month contracts to people during the month of June so that they would have till November to pay it out completely. You have to make monthly payments but you do miss the 20 percent penalty by doing that.”

Sumners says people can set up an installment plan or pay in person at the County Tax office, at any county courthouse branch office, over their touch-tone telephone, and online at HCTAX-dot-net.  Just do it before next Wednesday.
