New Athletic Director has High Hopes for UH Athletes

The University of Houston has introduced its new athletic director. Mack Rhoades takes over for Dave Maggart, who retired last month after seven years with the university. Rhodes comes from the University of Akron, where he presided over the construction of a new 54-million dollar stadium. He’s also credited with improving graduation rates for student athletes, and he says he hopes to do the same thing in Houston.

“Recently, just in the last two years the federal graduation rate in terms of student athletes in Houston were 45%. It increased to 59%. We’ve done the same thing over at University of Akron, where over the last few years, we are above the national average — 64% — and We’ve got to be better than that.”

At UH, Rhoades will oversee 16 intercollegiate sports.
