Free Legal Help This Weekend In San Leon

Free legal help is on the way for residents in San Leon in Galveston County this week. As Laurie Johnson reports, Hurricane Ike victims could use help negotiating through the legal red-tape created by the storm.

Volunteer attorneys will be on hand at the San Leon Community Church on 10th street on Sunday from 1-6. That community was hard hit by Ike and many residents still need legal help
five months after the storm.

Steve McIntyre is the supervising attorney with Lone Star Legal Aid, an organization that provides free legal help. He says lawyers will help walk residents through a number of different issues.

“For those folks who got behind on their mortgages because of the storm, we can help negotiate and buy people time. For those folks who are having trouble getting their assistance on their insurance. Some private lawyers are taking those insurance cases, but for those who don’t have assistance, perhaps we could help them out in working with the insurance companies and getting everything they’re entitled to. Folks who are having trouble with FEMA, didn’t get enough damage money from them, we can possibly do an appeal for them and ask for additional monies for their families.”

McIntyre says the assistance is completely free and that Spanish speaking attorneys will be on hand as well. Once again, the free legal help is Sunday from 1-6 at the San Leon Community Church at 805 10th Street.
