Listen
“I can only imagine, when that day comes.”
At the packed Champion Forest Baptist Church, mourners like former partner Jeffrey Michael listened to some of Abernethy’s favorite songs as they recalled the good times with a dedicated officer.
“He had older children than I did and so a lot of times when I was having family issues or something, I would come to him and as we were out riding on the streets, I would often ask him, hey Tim, this is what’s going on in my life. How did you handle it? He would always give me good advice on what he did raising his kids and always talking about his kids. He really was a true family man.”
“I just respected him and looked-up towards him.”
Chelsey Cranford knew Abernethy’s son in high school. She remembers a man who loved his job and his family.
“I think it makes people realize that good people get into bad situations and I think it’s really good that we’re coming together to honor such a good person.”
Abernethy was on-duty last Sunday when he was shot and killed while chasing a man through an apartment complex. The suspect has been charged with capital murder. HPD Chaplain Monty Montgomery says the fallen officer was a dedicated public servant.
“What we will never fully understand on this earth or today is how much evil was put aside, how many criminal acts that were prevented every day and how many citizen’s lives were protected by the good and faithful actions of Timothy Abernethy as a Houston Police officer.”
Abernethy’s sister, Evelyn Campbell, says she’ll miss the twinkle in her brother’s eyes.
“And those eyes didn’t just express joy, they expressed compassion. Tim had such a gentle and tender heart and I’m so thankful that I had him for a brother and for all the memories that I have. And I know when he met Jesus that Jesus was there and said, well done, good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of the Lord.”
Timothy Scott Abernethy was 43-years-old. He’s survived by his wife and two children.
