Eight people are in custody, another fifty are wanted in this large scale dog fighting ring. The investigations involved several department and lasted more than a year and a half. Public Safety spokeswoman Lisa Block says it all started with a phone call.

“The tip originally came from outside the state of Texas. We had Criminal Intelligence Service investigators who went undercover in this operation to gather the evidence they needed to arrest the people that were arrested today.”

At this time they aren’t saying much about case or the investigation. Only that large numbers of people would show up at certain locations and bet money to see dogs fight each other. Many of those dogs have now been removed from the owner’s property. Belinda Smith is with the DA’s office.

“We have approximately a hundred dogs that were seized in Harris County. There’s fifty to seventy five more that are supposed to be seized in Tyler County that are also associated with this particular investigation.”

The eight men arrested today all face charges of engaging in and conducting dog fighting…a crime that carries a penalty of up to two years in jail.
