Relief Offered This Summer for Low-Income Utility Customers

A Houston utility company announces programs to help its customers with electricity bill payments and energy consumption during the hot summer months. Pat Hernandez has the story.

Reliant Energy says it will help residential critical care customers and qualified low-income seniors with electricity bill payment assistance this summer including a moratorium on summer disconnects.

Vice President Albert Myres says the company has added another location to its popular cooling center program.

“If you’re at home, and you’re worried about your bill, turn off your air conditioner, come down here to the cooling center then go back home. The Reliant Energy ‘beat the heat’ centers are open from nine to five p.m. each weekday beginning beginning June sixth through October third.”

Ellen Seaton with Harris County Social Services says thousands ask for some type of assistance with their electricity bills each year.

“So far this year, we have already assisted over four hundred customers with just over ninety-five thousand dollars for an average assistance of two hundred and thirty-two dollars per Reliant customer.”

State Senator Rodney Ellis commended the utility company for its efforts to help, but says we all need to change our mindset.

“We are three percent. We, Americans, all of us. Three percent of the world’s population. Yet, we use a quarter of the world’s energy. We gotta be more efficient.”
