Mayor Unveils New Budget

Houston property owners will pay less in taxes for the fifth straight year under Mayor White’s new budget. The Mayor announced the 2009 fiscal budget at a news conference this afternoon.

He says Houston is the fastest growing big city in the country and it’s because of our record economic growth that he’s able to cut taxes while continuing to provide quality services.

Mayor White says the number one emphasis of the budget is public safety.

“There is a lot of other money for the HPD: the helicopters crews, the radios, the property room, and I could go on and on, but we made major commitments to public safety in the budget that also includes our fire department.”

The Major’s Budget Proposal adds more than 100 new police officers to the force and calls for a 4.5 percent raise for fire fighters. The plan now goes to the city council for approval.
