Barbara Bush began promoting literacy as her cause when her husband was vice president. The former first lady told audience members they can have a great impact if they choose to help in big and small ways.
“Every time we teach a mother how to read, the importance of their child being reading-ready for school, having healthy diets and giving their children all the love in the world we are influencing future generations. As women, we have all the opportunities to shape the world around us, just as you are doing through your work.”
Mrs. Bush’s remarks centered on literacy issues. She also chatted about her life as wife and mother to two U.S. Presidents. And she didn’t ignore tomorrow’s primary election.
“I certainly hope none of you expect me to make any political announcements regarding 2008. But I would urge you to vote. The only announcement to share is that we are staying out of politics. This is the first election since 1980 that a Bush has not been on the ticket and I, for one, am loving every single moment.”
After her speech, Texas A&M University President Dr. Elsa Murano presented a new Barbara Bush Scholarship. The full-ride A&M scholarship will be presented to a young woman in the Houston Independent School District.
