The Russian Cultural Center is not new. It’s been putting on events for over 3 years. But, so far most audience members have come from Houston’s sizable Russian community. This week they’ll be putting on their first ever film event, a Russian Documentary Showcase. Spokesperson Christina Levin says that with this event the Russian Cultural Center is hoping to widen, not only, the scope of its cultural offerings but, also its audience.

“The mission of the center is to expose community to the works of Russian born artists. Be it artworks, film, as in the case of this showcase, musical concerts, performing groups from Russia. And this year we are trying really hard to expose not only Russian speaking community to all these cultural events but attract more American audiences.”

The showcase will feature 3 films by award winning Russian documentary filmmaker, Marina Goldovskaya. She is best known for her films which chronicle the history of the Soviet Union and Russia. Her body of work covers Stalinist repression and Soviet labor camps, as well as Perestroika and the eventual demise of the Soviet Union. Despite the wide range covered by Goldovskaya’s films, one common thread runs through them all.

“All my films are about people, but at the same time about people in history. How people are reacting to the political situation to psychological pressures and how do they survive and remain human.”

The Russian Documentary Showcase begins Thursday evening. For more information go to For Houston Public Radio News, I’m Charles Bornstein.
