More than a thousand silk paintings are being installed as a public art display in the Houston Zoo.
Brightly colored silk paintings are flapping gently as they suspend from cables lining the reflection pool at the zoo. The silk disks are painted with different wild animals. The art was made by 1,300 Houston area schoolchildren under the supervision of City ArtWorks. Karen Keith is the director of City ArtWorks.
Each child receives free tickets to visit the zoo with family members and see the display. Douglas Smith is the manager of public programs at the zoo. He says the kids learn about art and about wildlife, all while displaying their own creativity.
The silk paintings will be on display at the zoo through December, although they’re at their best during the evening when the zoo is lit up and the lights filter through the swaying disks.
