While union membership has been in decline nationally it has taken a dramatic leap forward in Houston.

Tom Balanoff is president of the Service Employee’s International Union 0ne. Balanoff says a 5th company will be brought on board soon meaning almost 5,500 janitors in Houston will be unionized.

Balanoff says most of the janitors joining the union currently making less then $5.50 an hour and have no benefits. Ercilia Sandoval says through a translator janitors have simple needs.

Tom Balanoff says this effort in Houston began in the spring of 2004.
