As the holidays approach more people plan charitable giving into their year end budgets. The Better Business Bureau conducts financial accountability inquiries for local charities.

Every year the Better Business Bureau of Houston investigates the practices of charitable and non-profit organizations. This year’s list has more than 400 organizations on it. Alan Vera is on the BBB’s Board of Directors. He says there are four key standards they look for when assessing an organization’s financial practices.

The BBB publishes their list of findings online. Donors can check if an organization met the standards or not. BBB Houston President Dan Parsons says the list is not an endorsement or condemnation of charities, but rather a tool for people as they choose where to give their money.

Parsons says the list of greater concern is those organizations that choose not to provide information. He says most of the non-profits simply don’t want to take the time to fill out the forms, but some may be hiding something. Goodwill Industries President Steve Lufburrow.

Of the charitable organizations contacted, 218 met the accountability standards, 24 did not meet them and 152 did not provide information.
