State, county and city officials have formed a hurricane task force to assess the region’s evacuation plans and make recommendations for changes. The task force is composed of industry leaders and transportation experts.

Houston Mayor Bill White says the response from the state in the days leading up to Hurricane Rita was unacceptable. He along with Governor Rick Perry and Harris County Judge Robert Eckels, has formed ten-person task force to assess the state’s emergency response plan for the Houston region. He says the task force will submit a report by the end of the year.

The mayor did not specify exactly when that report would be ready or if it would come out before the end of the hurricane season. Jack Little, the former president and CEO of Shell Oil will chair the task force. Other members include former Continental Airlines CEO Gordon Bethune, Arlington Police Chief Theron Bowman and Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson. White says he also wants input from the community on any changes made to the plan. Comments can be posted on the City website.
