Gasoline supplies are getting back to normal after running dry during the Hurricane Rita evacuation.
Rice University researchers say the normal gasoline consumption for Houston and the surrounding area for this time a year is about 22 million gallons per day. Baker Institute energy fellow Kenneth Medlock says Rita doubled that number.
Despite Rita, prices at the pump have been holding steady. Medlock says the nation’s infrastructure can handle one event like Katrina. It remains to be seen if this experience will change people’s behaviors. Medlock says gas consumers should have one word in mind and that is conservation.
