Former Presidents George Bush and Bill Clinton spent time in Houston meeting with evacuees and raising money for victims of Hurricane Katrina.
Reprising their roles in the Tsunami fund-raising efforts, Presidents Bush and Clinton are travelling the country seeking donations. Former President George Bush says the money will help victims rebuild their homes and lives.
The fund will serve as an umbrella for the special funds set up by the governors of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. All the money collected will be distributed to the three governors for them to disburse the funds. Former President Bill Clinton says this is about more than getting the evacuees clothed and fed.
The Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund has already received contributions from close to 40 corporate sponsors. The largest contributors are Wal-Mart and the Walton Family Foundation, pledging more than $20 million. The two presidents did not set a fund-raising goal, but Mr. Clinton says no amount of money can replace what has been lost.
Numerous city, county, state and national elected officials joined Bush and Clinton at the Reliant Center, including Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama and several members of the Houston Congressional Delegation. In addition to corporate donations, individuals can contribute on the fund’s website.
