Teachers from across the country are gathered in Los Angeles for the 143rd annual National Education Association Conference. Donna Haschke is the president of the Texas State Teachers Association. She says two issues hang over the heads of Texas teachers. One is the funding problem being played out in Austin and the other is the lack of qualified teachers.

Haschke says the job of attracting and keeping teachers in Texas is made harder by competition from other states.

Haschke says others issues at the conference include closing the student achievement gap, funding No Child Left Behind and boosting outreach to minority communities.
