The transformation of Compaq Center into the new home of Lakewood Church is almost complete. The renovated building opens to the public on July 16th.

Some 50 contractors and consultants helped transform the former sports and entertainment arena into what’s being called the nation’s largest house of worship.

Mark Martof is principal director of the Church Design Studio of Morris Architects, the design team behind Toyota Center and Memorial City Mall’s renovation.

Seating has been added to the floor where the basketball court used to be.

Lakewood’s Pastor Joel Osteen will deliver sermons from a stage flanked by large video screens and waterfalls on each side.

A five-story building has been added on the Edloe Street side to house a broadcast production center. And other features have been added.

Martof says his firm doesn’t enter a project like Lakewood’s renovation of Compaq Center with pre-conceived ideas.
