Texas is setting up a new organ donor registry program. Organ procurement groups hope the new system will encourage people to make their wishes known.

LifeGift Organ Donation Center is one of three in the state that will design the new Donor Education, Awareness and Registry Program for Texas during the next couple of months. Texans used to be able to indicate their wishes about organ donation on drivers’ licenses. LifeGift Spokesperson Catherin Burch Graham says that may be coming back for the registry. The idea is to get people to express their wishes.

Graham says people donating organs have increased over the years the problem is that it’s not keeping up with demand.

Although the details of the program are still being worked out, a voluntary one dollar fee will be attached to license and auto tag renewels to pay for the cost of the registry.
