Mexican Independence Day is just a few sleeps away, and several events are lined up to celebrate the day that Mexico gained it’s independence to kick off Hispanic Heritage Month.

September 16, 1810 is commemorated as the day that Mexico gained it’s independence from Spain after a progressive priest, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, deemed the father of Mexican independence, proclaimed independence after encouraging Mexicans to take up arms against the Spanish government, according to The History Channel. Mexican Independence Day has since been celebrated around the world and known as the start of Hispanic Heritage Month, which kicks off Sept. 15.
