The website Niche has published its rankings of the Houston metro area high schools with the best teachers. But how do you evaluate such a thing? What makes a teacher great? On this edition of Houston Matters, we talk with Mark Tressler, vice president of product for Niche about how the site established its evaluation.

Then, we turn to a parent, a teacher’s union representative and a school administrator for their definitions — and we welcome yours. Think about the best teachers you ever had. What did they have in common? Why did they reach you in a way that other teachers didn’t? What qualities would you like all of Houston’s teachers to have? E-mail us your thoughts at talk@houstonmatters.org, or call us live during the show (starting at noon) at 713-440-8870.

Also this hour: A lot can happen in a week. Some of it good. Some of it bad. Some of it downright ugly. When faced with intriguing developments in the news, we turn to a rotating panel of “non-experts” to parse The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly of it all. Today, Russ Capper, Kyrie O’Connor and Wayne Ashley contemplate reaction to Beyoncé’s Super Bowl halftime performance, Stan Kroenke’s purchase of Waggoner Ranch, UH’s new quarterback criticizing the culture at Texas A&M and Austin cracking Trulia’s list of most narcissistic cities.

Plus: A conversation with writer and Houston native Nelda Hirsh, who's used a French King's love letters as the basis for a new novel.
