Last month (Dec. 14, 2015), Gov. Greg Abbott appointed
Mike Morath as the state’s next education commissioner. Morath, who’d served as a trustee for the Dallas Independent School District for the last five years, succeeds
Michael Williams, who stepped down last week (Jan. 1, 2016).
As head of the Texas Education Agency, Morath will oversee more than 1,200 school districts in the Lone Star State. A proponent of school choice, Gov. Abbott called Morath a “proven education reformer.”
Texas Tribune reporter Kiah Collier tells us about Morath and his new role.
