For years, the North Forest Independent School District has struggled. Less than two thirds of students there finish high school. So, the Texas Education Agency last year ordered that, unless there was significant improvement within the year, North Forest would be closed.

This week, the TEA upheld that decision, and announced North Forest will merge with HISD, a move Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-Lee calls a “civil rights violation.”

On this edition of Houston Matters, we learn more about the battle over the North Forest school district. We hear parents’ concerns, and we hear from the attorney representing North Forest, who vows to fight the decision in court.

Also, Houston is booming – last year, Harris County added more residents than any other U.S. county. We consider what so many new arrivals means for the area, and KUHF reporters offer a guide to Houston for newbies like Craig.

Plus – merging heavy metal…and mariachi…yes, really — and a chat with legendary Astros’ broadcaster Milo Hamilton.
