Lisa Trapani Shumate

Lisa Shumate

Associate Vice President, UH System & General Manager, Houston Public Media

As associate vice president and general manager, Lisa Trapani Shumate oversees the strategic direction and operations of Houston Public Media’s broadcast and digital assets which include the nation’s first educational television station TV8 (PBS), KUHF News 88.7 (NPR), and their digital subchannels.

She is also the executive director of the Houston Public Media Foundation which provides financial support to the media organization. Lisa’s responsibilities include raising Houston Public Media’s profile in the Greater Houston region.

Since joining Houston Public Media in 2011, Lisa has increased local content on all platforms, upgraded technology infrastructure and transmission as well as forged collaborations with other public media outlets in the region. Lisa has strengthened relationships with national programming partners, elected officials, educational institutions, community leaders and business groups. She oversaw the reorganization and rebranding of Houston Public Media as well as the development of “Unleashing Potential,” Houston Public Media’s 2020-2025 Strategic Plan.

Houston Public Media has since emerged as a national public safety leader working with the Department of Homeland Security, the University of Houston, and various other regional and national entities — PBS, NPR, APTS, and CPB — to support first responders with vital communications assets through datacasting technology.

Lisa currently serves on three national boards, the PBS Foundation Board, the Public Television Major Market Group and American Public Television. She chairs a subcommittee of the University of Houston President’s Racial Equity and Social Justice Committee. Lisa is a member of the Greater Houston Partnership’s Executive Women’s Partnership and is the recipient of regional and national awards for community involvement.

Previously, Lisa held management positions at KHOU 11 (TEGNA/CBS) and KTRK ABC 13 (Disney).

A native of Louisiana, Lisa now calls Houston home. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communication from Loyola University, a Master of Business Administration from the University of Houston, is a graduate of Rice University’s Leadership Coaching program and an International Coaching Federation (ICF) accredited coach.

Lisa is co-author of “You Got This! The Real skills You Need for Career Success,” a digital course by WILEY, an academic and instructional publishing company.
