Houston native rapper Travis Scott has announced an upcoming tour on his Instagram, which includes a stop in Houston.
While many fans commented their excitement for the U.S. and European tour, some in his own hometown are weary about him headlining another show, nearly two years after the Astroworld tragedy that left 10 dead.
“UTOPIA TOUR SOON” the caption read. “US AND EURO DATES SOON TO BE ANNOUNCE (sic)
I MISS THE ROAD I MISSS YALLLL.”
Although Scott himself has not officially announced any tour dates, Mayor Sylvester Turner confirmed the show will be held at the Toyota Center in October.
"Travis Scott and his promoters booked the Toyota Center for a concert in October,” Turner’s statement said. “Unlike the Astroworld Festival at NRG in 2021, the concert will be held in a different type of venue. The Toyota Center has been a good partner with the City of Houston, and we expect this to continue for this and every other concert.”
Turner added that before the tour announcement, Toyota Center representatives had meetings with public safety officials and the city's special events office.
“They will continue working together to ensure this concert's safety, not unlike the many other concerts and events held at Toyota Center each year."
But the Houston Police Officers’ Union said they were in “disbelief” that he was booked in the city again.
“Only days after the release of a 1,200-page report describing the tragic events that took place during this Astroworld Concert, we are advised that there will be another performance,” the HPOU statement said. “Just two weeks ago we were asking for prayers and healing for the families of the Astroworld tragedy and then we are once again opening those wounds with announcing another concert. We believe that it is unreasonable to allow this concert to go forward and call upon elected officials to stand up and say, not in our city, not again!”
According to the report, Scott spoke with investigators days after the tragedy. The rapper told investigators that, at least from his perspective on stage, everything seemed relatively normal in the crowd.
The report followed about a month after a Harris County grand jury declined to indict Scott for the Astroworld tragedy.
Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg said at the time that the grand jury did not find that any individuals were criminally responsible for the deaths, which were caused by a compaction in the crowd.
