So Houston is not the music capital of the world like Austin is, but the nation's fourth largest city is still home to many influential bands and artists.

For example, The Suffers, a local American soul band who recently appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman, or a little-known female singer called Beyonce, oh wait, she's pretty well known. Anyway, you get the idea.

Houston does have some artists that define the city and its diverse culture. Chris Gray, music editor at the Houston Press profiles three of them: Kenny Rogers, La Mafia and ZZ Top.
